name papers and "crossed writing"
I sometimes get questions about how to make name papers, especially of the "turn the paper and write your name crosswise over the target's" varieties.

A while back, I took a photo of what such a sample paper might look like, and I've been meaning to post it.  My impetus for doing so today is that in unrelated work, I found a digital copy of an 1832 letter to Mary Custis Lee from her aunt that illustrates on a larger scale exactly this sort of writing.  The digital archive of which it's a part describes the letter thus:

The letter is an example of a "crossed" letter, meaning that it was written in one direction, rotated, and then written cross-wise to save paper. Sometimes the respondents would write across the original letter and send it back. See also a letter in the collection from Robert E. Lee to his children.

The letter has nothing to do with conjure per se, but it's just pretty darned cool and I wanted to share it.  You can see the full letter here, at I Remain: A Digital Archive of Letters, Manuscripts, and Ephemera.

Anyway, here's the sample "crossed names" name paper I made to upload:

ugh, I forgot to rotate the photo.  But you get the idea.

i was told this was what people use to do to get the person they loved to love them. They would write the persons name on the bottom and cross their name across you can research it.

i can research it, huh? lol.. i do this for a living, sweetheart
Crossing your name over someone else's can be used for love, sure, but the reason you are using the crossing action is usually because you are trying to influence someone, sometimes *strongly* (like dominating or compelling). Crossing names is more often used for domination or to sway or nudge something, so if you do love work this way it's to give the spell's maker the "stronger position" in the relationship, the name of the person to be influenced written first, and the name of the person influencing written on top and across. So the emphasis is on "to make the person they loved love them" - which is not actually what everybody wants to do when they do love work. The act of inscribing your name atop and across someone else's is to give you the upper hand, to give you power to affect them.

IOW, there are other types of name paper and other types of petition paper besides just crossing, and sometimes others are more suited to love work. If I were hesitant to bring any domination or compelling elements into my love work, I would NOT use a crossed name paper but probably a circled petition written around both our names, for instance. I would be more likely to use a crossed name paper if I wanted my boss to be like me more and act better towards me, crossing names to "even the odds" of a naturally unequal relationship a little bit or something like that. I prefer my love relationships to be more equal; if I have to use a crossed name paper on a partner, I will just break up with them instead and find somebody I don't have to do dominating work on. But in that I am apparently unlike many, many others out there :-)

First off I would like to say terrific blog! I had a quick question that I'd like to ask if you do not mind.

I was curious to find out how you center yourself
and clear your mind before writing. I have had a
hard time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out.
I truly do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost simply just
trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints?
Appreciate it!

I don't know what you mean by "center yourself." People from diff. traditions use that phrase to mean different things, and it doesn't mean much of anything to many traditional rootworkers. If you are asking about petition-crafting, I have an FAQ directory post here http://karmazain.livejournal.com/130120.html and it has suggestions for petition-writing and choosing good petitions.

If you are looking for a consultation or lesson, I don't do anything like that for free. If you're advertising, go somewhere else.
